Attania Jean-Funny is a proud southern girl who was raised in the small community of Lake City, FL. She immigrated from Port-Au-Prince, Haiti with her father when she was three years old. Attania’s biological mother passed away and never left Haiti but she credits her adopted mother and village for the fact that she never felt like a motherless child and her being able to realize the American dream.
After graduating from high school with honors, she received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in biology education from Florida A&M University. She also earned an Educational Leadership degree from Baruch College. This allowed her to have a rewarding career in the education field for over twenty years. Seeing her students go on to have productive lives is her greatest joy as an educator. During the 2018-19 school year, she represented North Clayton High School as Teacher of the Year. This was one of the proudest moments in her career. Attania knows first hand that obtaining a quality education can change the trajectory of your life.
Attania’s passion for effective representation has been a driving force within her community engagement. She is a founding executive board member of the reestablished Clayton County Federation of Democratic Women and currently serves as 1st Vice President. She also serves on the Clayton County Board of Appeals and community budget advisory committee for Clayton County Public Schools. Attania is also a former executive board member of the Clayton County Education Association. She enjoys advocating for the needs of the community through her engagement with county leadership at commissioner and school board meetings. Attania believes that sometimes we should have the tough conversations for progress to continue.
As we go through this journey, we are afforded the opportunity to see our surroundings through different lenses. She uses her science background and lessons of motherhood to bring awareness to the need for better pediatric health care through her own experiences and countless hours talking to other parents and health care officials. Due to the lack of access to quality prenatal and postpartum healthcare, Georgia has an unacceptable high maternal mortality rate. We need advocates in the Georgia Assembly that will make this issue a priority.
Attania is the wife of John Funny, Jr. and the mother of son, John and daughter, Jordan. They reside in Hampton, GA in Clayton County. She is a member and leadership fellow of Tabernacle of Praise Church International.
